As much as I love working on my art journals and creating fun and meaningful (to me) pages, life just has a way of keeping me distracted from this project. This art journal was actually started in 2016 and then LIFE happened . . . . I’ve made several smaller art journals since then, but this one just sat on a shelf out in my sewing room / art room / design studio while the needs of the people in my life kept me preoccupied. For a rather long time. Thankfully, we managed to take care of what we could, help those who needed us to the best of our ability, and now life seems a bit less chaotic. For the minute!
It seems like we just about got to the place where we could take a breath, and then BAM! Something else happened, like the flood last autumn after we had invested several months painting and updating our house. We had hoped to have everything just about wrapped up by Christmas, but it wasn’t until Christmas Eve when we finally had that mess cleaned up enough to put up our Christmas tree.
And then there are the necessities of life that keep us distracted, like doing the laundry, cooking (occasionally), paying the bills, cleaning the house, and for me there is always my writing, editing, and teaching responsibilities. Everyday there is something that is urgent, demanding my attention, right now (if not yesterday!), so my pretty art journal sits here on my desk hiding beneath a pile of teaching materials. I am frequently reminded, by its silent presence, that I haven’t worked on it since I made the cover. In 2016. But since I really do like the cover on this one, I decided to switch up the date and try again. We’ll see how it goes.
Of course getting the flu, taking the kids to dr., dentist, orthodontist, and eye dr. appointments also play a part in my neglect of my lonely art journal. The days fly by, the hours and minutes slip silently into the realms of memory, and still I see my art journal waiting patiently for me to return. Perhaps today. Or tomorrow. But I keep it here as a reminder that I must carve out a bit of time to be creative. When I look at my desk each morning, as I try to ignore the ever growing pile of papers, finger puppets, white board and markers, magnetic stars and virtual rewards for my students, I can’t help but feel a bit sad that I am so busy I don’t have time just to have fun.
So today I have decided that even if it is only for 15 or 20 minutes, I am going to play! I’ll post pictures of my creation, but in the meantime, I’ve determined that I have to stop working ALL. THE. TIME. and take a break now and then. Today’s the day! How about you? Do you manage to find time to have fun? Have you ever created an art journal . . . just for the fun of being creative? Well, maybe today is the day for YOU, too!
