Some days we just need to be reminded that we are not alone, and that even through our most difficult times life, we can rest in God’s promises that He will never leave us if we trust in Him, and that He does have plans for our life that are always for our good. It may not always feel like that, but it it true.

If you have lived long enough to experience a broken heart, health concerns, relationship problems, financial challenges, or any number of other difficulties in life, then you know that it is hard to keep going when you are in the middle of it all. But once you come out into the sunlight of healing and wholeness, you can rejoice for God’s gift of grace.

So if you are struggling through days of weariness as a young mama, or searching for a way of escape from a hurtful or abusive situation, or worrying about a child that has gone astray, or devastated because of a broken marriage – you are not alone, and others have gone before you, who will tell you that you can get through this, too. You need to look to God for comfort, guidance, grace, and healing . . . and if you are willing . . . He can make you whole again.

I write this tonight after a conversation with someone I love dearly who is right there, right now, and afraid of the future. These are the days we need to stand up, show up, and determine to take steps in the right direction. Even baby steps will work, if you are walking towards the light of God’s love, so start moving. Take that first baby step, and just do the next right thing. Even if that is to go home and tuck your babies in, read your Bible to fill your mind with the truth of God’s Word, and get a good night’s sleep. Then, tomorrow, take a few more baby steps no matter how difficult it might be, just make sure you are walking towards God and He will guide you. He promised.

If you would like to print out either one of these Scripture verses, or upload them to your computer or your phone, just right click and “save as an image” to your computer. Put them right where you will be reminded of God’s endless love and that He will never leave you, no matter how many other people let you down, God never will. I promise.

Favorite Things: RUBY magazine and New Friends

February 1, 2018 by VintageMama 7 Comments

RUBY magazine March 2018

Hello February! We are one day closer to spring, and it’s been crazy busy around here . . . as I’m sure it has been for you, as well. Even after the hustle and bustle of the holiday season is over, suddenly there are so many new adventures on the horizon. I’m really excited to welcome Theresa Begin to the Thursday Favorite Things Team! It always amazes me how God brings friends from around the world and all across our great nation together through the gift of the internet. Yes, I know the internet has all kinds of “dangerous” things about it, too, so I do my best to be careful and for sure, to protect my daughters from online dangers. But I also have experienced the gift of friendship with women that I never, ever would have met in my little farming community in northern Indiana!

One of the ways that God has blessed me through my online connections is with all of the amazing writers who share their gift of words, stories, devotionals, poetry, and inspirational articles every month. Today the February issue of RUBY magazine is available, with a great article by Theresa Begin about starting and keeping a gratitude journal. If you haven’t started a journal yet this new year, be sure to read her article for some great tips and advice to get you going.

I love working on the RUBY magazine each month, and Theresa has been a great help with the magazine this past month. I am so grateful for her servant’s heart, her love for the Lord, her love for her family, and her passion for helping people. I hope you will welcome Theresa to our weekly linky party, stop by her blog and give her a virtual hug! You will love her, too! I’ve got some exciting news to share with you all in the comingFavorite Things: RUBY magazine and New Friends week or so, but for now, I have to check on the students in my online writing class . . . but I’ll be back to connect with some of you this week, as well.

Thanks for stopping by the Thursday Favorite Things Blog Hop and Linky Party – hope to see you again soon!

Cozy Refashioned Sweater DIY Home Decor

January 25, 2018 by VintageMama 6 Comments

Cozy Sweater DIY Home Decor Collage LG

Every January, after all of the beautiful holiday decorations are safely tucked away for another year, it seems like our house is kind of . . . lonely. Well, if not exactly lonely, at least a bit boring, and I always wish I could figure out how to liven things up a bit between the Christmas holiday season and spring when there is everything to celebrate. With Valentine’s Day just a couple of weeks away, that is enough reason to brighten things up around here with a few pops of red, but I wanted to find some creative ways to use what I already have on hand to add a bit of pizzazz to our home on these dreary, gray winter days.

As I was scouting around for a few new ideas to try (in my spare time, of course!), I came across a ton of DIY projects and tutorials for using old sweaters – which I actually have about a gazillion old sweaters out in the sewing room because I have collected them for the refashioned patchwork sweaters I make and sell in my Etsy shop, Tatters to Treasures. But there is always a lot of scraps left over when I cut up a few sweaters to make one, new patchwork sweater, so it just seemed like a good idea to check out some of these winter DIY projects made using old, thrifted sweaters.

Actually it’s looking pretty promising for me to work out in the sewing room again this week – I’ve been sorting and organizing all of the stuff that accumulated out there while we were recovering from the flood – and all of the sweaters stashed neatly in tote bins, labeled by size and color, so I can find what I need when I’m making the next whatever I’m making next . . . so it should be pretty easy to locate a few sweaters that are just right for making a few pillows for our newly updated living room, and I might even make a new wreath for the front door.

There’s just no end of creative projects you can make with old sweaters, so if you are looking for a way to brighten up your home this winter, why not try one of these ideas? Be sure to visit the original blogger / creator of each design for the complete tutorial for making your very own cozy refashioned sweater DIY home decor!

DIY Button Heart Sweater Pillow

from Setting for Four

Isn’t this one adorable? The buttons on the side, and the hand-appliqued heart in the middle add just the right touch for this winter / Valentine’s Day DIY project. Of course, you could make it in any color combination – it would look cute with a red heart on a white pillow, or a white heart on a pink pillow, or whatever else your creative mind can come up with. Find the original blog post at Setting for Four.

Valentine Sweater Wreath

at Crafts n Coffee

I love this color combination! The black, gray, and white flowers with the red heart button centers are the perfect accent for this dark red repurposed sweater wreath. The flowers are cut from felt and print fabric, and the base is covered with dark red sweater fabric. Super simple, but just perfect for a late winter / Valentine’s Day pop of color on your front door. To find this wreath, along with several other DIY projects from repurposed sweaters, visit Crafts n’ Coffee.

This wreath is actually made by wrapping yarn around the base and then embellishing it with red calico print flowers, but I think you could also make it using repurposed sweater material and it would turn out almost as cute as this one. Stop by and visit Haute Apple Pie for the complete tutorial for making this wreath, and she also shows you how to make those adorable fabric flowers.

Here is a great tutorial for making basic repurposed sweater pillows which can be made in any color you can imagine – well any color old sweater you have on hand or can find at your local thrift shop. I really like to neutral colors in this collection, and they just look so warm and cozy! A few of these on the couch and in your favorite chair will really make your home feel snuggly warm all winter long. Visit Tidbits Cami

Gray and White Sweater Wreath from Stone Gable Blog

Gray and White Sweater Wreath

from Stone Gable Blog

This beautiful gray and ivory repurposed sweater wreath is just the perfect combination of colors to create a design that is both elegant and casual all at the same time. The various shades of gray along with the ivory, and the gray and ivory twine tying it all together features snowy pine cones in the center. You will find two more winter wreath designs at Stone Gable Blog, along with the tutorials for making your very own gorgeous repurposed sweater wreath for your front door.

Well, it looks like I have my work cut out for me just as soon as I can get back out into the sewing room. It’s been a busy week, but I actually have accomplished lots of the projects on my To Do list, so I just might find a couple of hours to get out there and make something fun! I hope you will pop in and join us for this week’s Favorite Things Linky Party . . . tomorrow morning I’m going to try to get out and about to visit a few of you to see what you’ve been up to this week. Hope to see you at the party!

Favorite Things: Winter DIY

January 18, 2018 by VintageMama 13 Comments

Favorite Things Winter DIY

One of my favorite things about winter is that I get to stay inside and work on DIY projects. Unfortunately, I also have a few other responsibilities, so I can’t just “play” all day long, but there definitely seems to be more opportunities to stay home where it is warm and cozy, which makes it much easier to find a few minutes here and there to “make stuff.”

I’m almost all reorganized out in my sewing room, so now it is time to pick up a few of the projects I started before the flood, and even make plans to start a couple of new projects. So this week I was able to get out and about to visit some of the other bloggers from last week’s party and I discovered a few new ideas that I want to try.

I hope you have time to be creative on these cold winter days, too!

Easy Flannel Baby Blanket

Adorable Flannel Baby Blanket from Emily at Nap Time Creations

I’ve made lots and lots of baby blankets, but I always love to learn new techniques, so when I came across this blog post at Nap Time Creations I decided to check it out. She uses two pieces of cute flannel fabric, stitches them together (right sides facing) leaving an opening to turn right side out, hand stitches the opening, and then ties it with coordinating yarn. So cute!

My Heart Will Always Find You Valentine Printable from Kevin and Trisha at Blowing Away Out West

It’s almost Valentine’s Day, so there are lots of fun DIY crafts and projects online to inspire you to make something creative for the special people in your life. I just love this cute printable from Kevin and Trisha at Blowing Away Out West! It is light-hearted and whimsical with just a hint of anticipation for spring. The bicycle with the flower baskets just makes me want to sing and welcome a new season! I think I will print this out for my art journal . . . on my way to do that right now!

Cozy Winter Decor from the Red Painted Cottage

Wreaths are so perfect for every season and this one is so fluffy and cozy that it makes me want to curl up with a good book by the fireplace. But, too bad, because I have too many other things to do today to slow down long enough to read. Maybe this evening when my work is done, but I do just love the soft, fluffy white yarn and the black and white bow adds just the right touch to this beautiful wreath from the Red Painted Cottage.

I hope you can join us this week for the Favorite Things Linky Party . . . make new friends, discover creative bloggers, and find lots of creative inspiration for your home and family. Hope to see you there!

Home Economics 101

December 28, 2017 by VintageMama 2 Comments

Home Economics 101

I will admit . . . I’m kind of an old-fashioned girl. You might have guessed that from the title of my blog, “Vintage Mama’s Cottage.” I’ve been a wife and mom for a very long time, and I’ve seen lots of trends and fads come and go over the years. One that has been especially close to my heart that has rather gone by the wayside is the importance of “home making.” When I was in high school we took a class called “Home Economics.” That was back in the day when, for better or worse, millions of young women found a lifetime of joy and fulfillment investing their time and energy into being creative in their homes. Back then, many of us (perhaps only those of us in rural, small-town, middle America?) found that creating a cozy home for our family was . . .  well . . . what we actually WANTED to do.

Of course, there are lots of other ways for a woman to express her creativity, talent, skills, education, and energy other than home making. And for that I am truly grateful. Women now have so many more opportunities than I did when I was just a young a woman. Unfortunately in the last 40 years, it seems as if we have lost the art of home making, and for that I believe are missing out on some of the greatest joys in life. But then that’s just my humble opinion!

As I’ve been contemplating a new year and some adjustments I’m hoping to make in my daily routine, I’ve been thinking about how busy we have all become with so many opportunities to do whatever we want in life. That’s a very good thing, but I’ve noticed that unless we can limit ourselves to those things that REALLY, truly matter to us in life, we become like a wandering stream, or more accurately, like a rushing river. Always in a hurry but not always knowing exactly where we are headed. I have felt that way for several months lately, partly because of having to deal with the after effects of the flooding in our laundry room last autumn.

Home Makers Creed Betty Crocker

Everything has been rather at “sixes and sevens” as my grandma used to say – the bed was in the living room, the dressers were in the dining room, all of the clothing was piled on chairs in the family room, and the shoes . . . well, let’s just say it was challenging to get ready for church on Sunday morning when the shoes were . . . somewhere over there. Then, we finally got the damages repaired but before we could put things back where they belonged, it was time to get out the Christmas decorations. More stuff all over the place.

Now that Christmas is over and it is time to begin putting all that stuff away, we have had horrible weather which has made it difficult to accomplish anything because we are freezing! Even with a roaring fire in the fireplace, it is still a bit chilly because of the sub-zero temperatures outside, and the snowy, icy roads make it really miserable to get outside. And in the middle of everything else, it is now that time of year when everyone in the family gets a cold or the flu. Not too bad so far, but Christmas day was rather miserable with coughing, sore throats, and a sinus infection lurking on the edges of my brain.

So as I’ve been pondering the new year, I realized that one thing that I think I’ve been missing is the “permission” to return to a focus on my home and family. Of course, I do that all the time any way, but I’ve decided to be more intentional about eliminating a few things that have kept me distracted. Not that I’m going to stop doing my other work, but I think that it will be much more peaceful in my mind and throughout my days if I stop feeling like taking care of my home is the last item on my To Do list. One way that I’m going to do that is to put together a few blog posts on Home Economics 101 for you, my readers.

If you are feeling the pull towards a gentler time, a little bit slower pace to your days, and a redirection towards making your home a place of joy, beauty, and peacefulness, come on along as I revisit some days gone by. Let’s remember the best things about the “good old days” when little girls wanted to grow up and take care of a home and a family. If that’s you (and I realize it isn’t for everyone!), stop back and let’s see what we can discover.

In the meantime, join us for this week’s Favorite Things Blog Hop and Linky Party – this is one place you’ll find lots of inspiration for making your home a lovely and inspiring refuge for your family. And you’ll make new friends along the way, too! Hope to connect with you soon at the party . . .

Favorite Things: Last-Minute DIY Christmas Gifts in a Jar

December 14, 2017 by VintageMama 5 Comments

DIY Christmas Gifts in a Jar COLLAGE

Since we have not been able to do very much Christmas decorating, baking, or creating this year, I’m still needing to come up with a few ideas of quick and easy gift ideas for some friends and neighbors to let them know how much we love and appreciate them. That’s getting more difficult every year, it seems, because everyone has not only pretty much everything they NEED, but most of us have way more than we WANT . . . and lots of us are trying to minimize the amount of unnecessary stuff in our homes. That’s a good project, but that’s for another blog post.

For right now, I’m thinking that I want to put together some of these cute gifts in a jar for a couple of reasons. One, I don’t have the time, energy, money, or space right now to come up with big, expensive gifts. Our house is still awaiting the contractors to come and finish putting things back together following our flood at the end of October, so things remain kind of topsy-turvy around here which makes it difficult to launch new projects. Including getting the Christmas tree up and wrapping gifts. I hope we can do that this weekend. Better late than never, I guess.

And because of all these necessary home repair repair projects, some of them we are doing ourselves to save money, we have very little time, energy, or money left-over this year for anything else. That’s when I decided that I’m running out of time to do anything super-duper spectacular for Christmas and started looking for a few ideas for simple DIY gift ideas – but also something that won’t sit around collecting dust for the next several years. I know! Make something edible! That’s when I remembered all of the creative ideas for putting together cookie, cake, and brownie mixes in a jar. There are even some soup recipes that can be put together in a jar with a ribbon tied around it and POOF! You have a thoughtful gift for someone you love, without a ton of stress, expense, or time involved.

So if by chance you are in a similar situation this Christmas, give this a try. I’m going to be putting together several of these next week for a few of our neighbors and friends. Here are just three that I came across that I wanted to share with you, but there are so many more ideas out here!

Gingerbread Cookies in a JarGingerbread Cookies in a Jar

from DIY Projects for Teens

Gingerbread Cookies in a Jar from DIY Projects for Teens would be a fun gift to make for a special teenager in your life, but it would also be fun to make WITH your teenager. And since I have two teenagers right now, I’m thinking this is definitely one we are going to make next week. For the complete recipe and instructions, visit DIY Projects for Teens.

Cranberry Winter Cookies from Cul de Sac CoolCranberry Winter Cookies in a Jar

from Cul de Sac Cool

Well, this one looks like an amazing cookie recipe, besides the fact that it is really pretty in the jar, too! Cranberry Winter Cookies in a Jar from Cul de Sac Cool includes printable recipe cards that you can include with this DIY Christmas gift in a jar. We might just make some of these here at home while we’re at it!

Three Gifts in a Jar from Afternoon Baking with GrandmaThree DIY Gifts in a Jar

from Afternoon Baking with Grandma

Afternoon Baking with Grandma . . . now that sounds like fun! Stop by and visit Grandma where you’ll find recipes and instructions for making all three of these gifts in a jar, including Oatmeal Scotchies, M&Ms Cookies, and Granola Muffin Mix. Guess I better get busy making some gifts in a jar, because Christmas is just around the corner!

Today, however, if you have time to join us for the Thursday Favorite Things Blog Hop and Linky Party, we would love to connect with you. I do try to get out and about to visit some of you each week, but it’s been challenging getting anything accomplished lately. Can’t wait to have my house back to “normal”! Hope to see you soon at the party!

Some of My Favorite Things: Christmas Gift Baskets

December 7, 2017 by VintageMama 13 Comments

Christmas Gift Baskets MAIN IMAGE

The other day Miss Sassy Pants was talking about putting together a gift basket for one of her friends, and we were tossing around ideas of what she might want to put in her little basket. So I decided to check Pinterest (where else???) for a few creative suggestions. Here are a few that I found . . . . she might have a hard time making up her mind, but at least we’ve got a place to start!

Snow-Day-Survival-Kit-DIY-Christmas-Gift-by-The-DIY-MommySnow Day Survival Kit

from The DIY Mommy

This one would be perfect for a mom who could use come inspiration for fun stuff to do with the kiddos on a snow day . . . you know, when you really can’t get out of the house to do anything, but you get to stay home and play?!?! How fun would this be? It might be messy but making memories often is, so give this one a try for a special mom on your gift list. Visit The DIY Mommy for the list of everything she put in this gift basket, as well as TONS of other creative ideas for gift baskets.

Cozy Christmas Gift Basket

from Jessica at Fantabulosity

With a soft and cuddly blanket, fuzzy socks or slippers, a charming coffee mug, and homemade hot cocoa mix, your gift basket will be a favorite, that’s for sure! Visit Jessica at Fantabulosity for this idea and so much more!

Christmas Cookie Baking Gift Basket

from Taryn Whiteaker

I’m thinking that it would be great fun to receive one of these gift baskets, but it’s gotta be fun to make them, too! Especially for gift giving to someone, or several someones, that might be hard to buy for . . . or for a whole family. Check out the creative gift giving ideas from Taryn Whiteaker on her blog.

Pioneer Woman Gift Basket

from LandeeLu

Well, I have to admit I LOVE all of the Pioneer Woman stuff! I think that this might be what I tell my family the next time they ask me what I want for Christmas – but wouldn’t this make the perfect gift for someone who loves to cook or bake, and who also loves vintage-y stuff for their home? Yes, please! Visit LandeeLu for lots more creative holiday ideas.

This cute Spaghetti Supper Gift Basket would be a great gift for a family. Sometimes it is tricky to figure out what to get everyone in a large family (especially if you can’t really afford a separate gift for everyone!) so this gift basket would make everyone happy! Check out Dreaming DIY for even more great Christmas and holiday ideas.
