Now that our girls are both teenagers, we aren’t often looking for summer activities, especially outdoor activities, because the heat and the sun are really a problem for my whole family. Last weekend when I was working outside with my new power washer, I was having so much fun and all that water splashing around was keeping me cool, so I didn’t realize that I was getting a sunburn. Fortunately, I eventually realized what was happening in time to get out of the sun before I was burned to a crisp . . . but it was still rather painful for a couple of days. So as I was thinking about stay at home summer activities for the Home Matters Linky Party #235, I decided to update my summer reading list. #SummerActivites #HomeMattersParty
I actually haven’t been reading as much lately, at least as much as I used to before I discovered that I can watch historical fiction movies right on my little hand-held device – which is so much lighter and easier to hold than a great big book. But I miss the whole experience of diving into a book and having a great adventure through the written word. So, this summer I’ve decided to set a goal for getting back into reading real books again and this is a great place to start.
We also have a wonderful library in our community with lots of summer activities for kids, teens, and adults, so that will also be a bit of motivation for me. I love to read about real people in history, or at least historical fiction that tells stories that could have actually happened in real situations and settings. I especially have found the stories about people who lived through the times of the world wars and the Great Depression. I always find great inspiration in stories of survivors in the midst of great suffering and tragedy, and the resilience of the human spirit.
Here I have collected several books that I hope to read this summer, and I would encourage you to set a goal to read a few books this summer, too. Whatever your favorite genre of books, take the time to fill your mind with adventure, discovery, creativity, devotion, or inspiration. You’ll be glad you did! And summer is the perfect time to make a reading list, because if you are anything like me and being at the beach or outside on the hot, humid days of summer, you’ll be happy to stay in a cool, air-conditioned house or library and sail away on your own summer adventure. I’ll be watching to see what YOU have planned for your stay-at-home summer activities!
