We’ve had container gardens in our yard and on our deck for many years, but it is always fun to discover new, creative ideas. As I was looking for a bit of inspiration for this week’s Home Matters Linky Party #230 theme of container gardens, I found some gorgeous planters filled with herbs. Herbs are the kind of plants that anyone can grow – because it is almost impossible to kill them! Even when you want to tame them from growing all over the sidewalk, fence, or lawn, it can be challenging. #ContainerGardens #PottedPlants #HomeMattersParty
One of the herb plants that I’ve had take over a whole raised garden bed is mint. It is so pretty, and it smells great, but you can’t control it. If you like mint tea, it is perfect for growing in a container because you can keep it under control. Set a bucket or a basket outside the kitchen door, fill it with some good garden soil and some small rocks in the bottom for drainage, and you’ll have fresh mint all summer.
But trust me . . . . if you just plant it directly in the ground, it will take over everything!
Another one that is really pretty is lavender, along with thyme and sage, and you have a great combination of sweet smells and variegated foliage. Some of the articles that I came across for this week’s Home Matters Linky Party offer advice on which herbs grow best together in a container. That is great information for me to have, because I’ve just always tossed things in together that I thought would look pretty. Perhaps that’s not the best strategy!
I’m really looking forward to getting a few container gardens started in the next couple of weeks. It is rainy and kind of chilly today, but I’m hoping that the weekend will warm up enough to get the flower beds cleaned out. I also have several perennials that are popping up and some are even blooming, but the old, dead stuff from last year is still lingering in the corners and beneath the shrubs. My work is definitely cut out for me for the next few warm days of spring.
I hope you can join us for this week’s Home Matters Linky Party. I always find creative inspiration from the other bloggers who join the party each week. Won’t you join in all the fun, too? See you there!
