There’s a blizzard on the way this weekend. What will you be doing if you get snowed in? We’ve had quite a few opportunities recently to just hang out at home with our girls, and sometimes we are all just ready for some quiet time. We read or watch a movie or just take a nap. But sometimes we like to do stuff together. That’s not too challenging when the kids are little, because as the mom you can decide what games to play or crafts to work on or activities to do with your littles. But once they get a bit more grown up, it can be tricky finding something that everyone likes to do together.
Here are a few ideas that have worked for us for fun family times with two teenagers. And with the potential for a real blizzard on the horizon, I’m planning on having a crock pot with soup simmering while we watch a movie together, play some games, and finish the puzzle we started last weekend. What does your family do on snow days? If you are past the days when building a fort with pillows and blankets kept the kiddos occupied for a minute or two, I would love to hear about ideas that have worked for you.
BOARD GAMES that my girls love to play . . . .
We discovered that our girls love to play Trivial Pursuit when we were on a little family getaway. We had so much fun playing in teams because some of the stuff the adults had no clue about, the girls knew the answer. And the questions about stuff that happened in the 80s, well that was mom and dad’s category. It was great fun, and the girls often ask if we can play this game on a Friday or Saturday night. Sometimes on Sunday afternoons we get out the games and this is one of their favorites.
Of course Monopoly is a traditional family favorite, and our girls really enjoy playing this game as a family. Years ago, when my big kids were younger, it was somewhat of a cut-throat activity when the teenage brother would annihilate his little sister within the first 15 minutes of the game. He would buy up everything as fast as he could, before she could even figure out what was going on, and then when he had all the property and money, the game was over. I always wondered how fun that could be . . . after all, isn’t part of the fun just playing the game? For him, the fun was in winning, and winning BIG! These days, we play a rather tame version of Monopoly, trading properties and just having fun. If you are snowed in, this is a great way to get your family having fun together.
Here’s another old fashioned card game that we love to play with our family. This one doesn’t leave any time for talking because it goes so fast, but it really is a lot of fun! There are several other card games that we like to play, but this one has become a favorite.
Jenga is another fun-filled table game that we like to play together. It is really hysterical to watch the girls try to maneuver the blocks to avoid tipping the tower over. Then when it does come crashing down, it is time to stack up the blocks and start all over again. I promise that you will have a lot of fun playing some of these games with your kids or grandkids.
Here’s a game that we got our family for Christmas. I will admit, I was a bit skeptical about whether this one would be fun for the whole family. When you have such a wide variation in ages it can be challenging (like with Trivial Pursuit), but when we started playing this game the girls wanted to play it every night! It was so funny, we would be laughing so hard we could barely talk. It is kind of like charades where you try to act out or use words to get your partner to come up with the “catch phrase” on your turn. Trust me, it is FUN!
Along with the soup in the crock pot and maybe some freshly baked bread or muffins, we still have the jigsaw puzzle on the table that we want to finish this weekend, and we will also be looking for a few movies that our whole family will enjoy. I would love to hear your ideas of movies or games that your family enjoys. I hope you have a good weekend and that you stay warm and cozy if the blizzard is heading your direction.
