So it is finally snowing here. Not too much, just enough to cover everything with a fresh coat of soft white snow. It was blowing a bit when we went out this morning for a walk. But it was really beautiful and so peaceful. So far this month, however, things have not really been terribly peaceful or productive, no matter how determined I am to make that happen. It seems like one thing after another has kept me from staying focused on my goals, and that gets discouraging. But here I am, again today, trying to make the most of a day with a few interruptions and limitations.
It is always kind of chaotic around here right after the holidays. I suspect it is like that for many families. In between all of the Christmas shopping, wrapping, decorating, and parties there is always the reality of the same old daily responsibilities of laundry, grocery shopping, cooking, cleaning, paying bills, and occasionally talking to the other members of the family. It gets tricky.
For me there is also the little nagging thought in the back of my head that, just as soon as I survive all of the Christmas and then New Year’s festivities, four days later I have a kid’s birthday to think about. And we all know, that even though there are holidays and birthdays, there usually isn’t any more money or time, and there are just as many bills and of course, far more expenses than we have in all the other months of the year. That’s enough to cause a mama to have a few anxious moments!
As I started this week with high hopes of getting reorganized, decluttered, and all caught up with my computer projects, I found myself sidelined for a couple of days as a result of a minor accident – while out walking the dog yesterday, when it was a balmy 40 degrees and a gentle breeze, when we were just about back home from our cruise around the neighborhood, the dog spotted a squirrel.
Now usually I see those little critters before the dog does (I know right where they hide, in a woodpile three doors down from your house), but this time, I didn’t see the squirrel until it was too late. About the time I felt the dog’s leash almost rip my right hand off, I realized what was happening. Of course, I pulled back with all my strength, but the damage was done. This is the first time this has happened with this dog, so I’m grateful that we don’t have this little drama being played out everyday when we go for our morning walk . . . but nevertheless, my hand was in pretty bad shape by the time we got home.
I didn’t realize until I came in the house and took off my gloves just how much damage had been done. The whole right side of my right hand was all swollen up and throbbing, becoming more black and blue by the minute. I immediately put ice on it and elevated it which helped with the swelling and the pain, but of course, that was the end of any work I was planning to accomplish. The good news is that my hand is not broken, but still . . . .
Today it is quite a bit better, with the swelling greatly reduced, but now the various shades of black and blue are creeping from the base of my ring finger all the way up my forearm. And it really hurts today!
But here I am, trying my best to get a few things accomplished. So this is my blog post for this week’s Favorite Things Blog Hop and Linky Party. Not much to show for all of my determination to create an organized, peaceful home so far this year. I’m trying, I promise, and I know that every day isn’t going to be so challenging. But as Alexander said, “Some days are like that, even in Australia.” (If you have never read “Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day” you really must read it to your kids or your grandkids or just for yourself)
I hope you are having a better week than I am and that you will join us for the party. It’s lots of fun! See you soon,
