When I was a little girl, I remember my mom and dad listening to a song on the radio that always made me wonder . . . . “What’s behind the green door?” Of course, I didn’t really listen to the rest of the words of that song, which was probably rather tricky anyway since we were listening to an old transistor radio, set to an AM station that would fade in and out all the time. My dad would move that little radio from one corner of the kitchen to another place where he thought we could get better reception. But that didn’t always work, and there would be static and sometimes other stations could be heard with people talking or a baseball game announcer or a jazz band or some country music song. All of my life I’ve wondered “What’s behind the green door?” So when I thought about tackling the task this summer of painting our front door, of course, that song came wandering back from my childhood memories and got stuck in my head.
One of the reasons that I’m finding it rather challenging this summer to keep up with all of my blogging responsibilities is because we are working on so many home update projects (again!) that my days seem to become filled up with other projects rather quickly. If you’ve read along on my home improvement journey over the past several months, you may recall that we started last summer to paint the whole inside of our house, as well as replace some carpeting and flooring in the bathroom. We managed to finish painting the living room, my little office, the girls’ bedrooms, and the master bathroom, but then a water pipe behind our washing machine broke and flooded our laundry room in October.
So we’ve been playing “catch up” ever since, having to replace some of the brand new flooring we had just installed, as well as some dry wall and sub floor, before we could replace the carpeting. All of those projects not only take $$$ (which we’ve been saving up for) but they also take a lot of time. Some days I just wish I could finish everything all at once – if I was magic or super-human – because I’m just weary of having everything in turmoil while we do what we can on the weekends and then have to wait all week to get back to whatever project we are most recently working on.
We’ve made great progress, but then as soon as spring arrived we had a TON of outside work to do! Our goal was to get the really big projects finished before the weather got too hot, so at least those things are pretty much wrapped up. We still need to replace the deck boards or completely replace the entire deck with a concrete slab, but that will have to wait until autumn or even next spring. That is the BIGGEST project and the most expensive, so we’ll see how soon that can be done.
In the meantime, we got the flower beds cleaned up and planted with a few new perennials and some potted annuals, and we pulled out a whole bunch of old bricks that were crooked and heaved up from the tree roots, with weeds growing up between them. It was a mess! We also tore out the overgrown landscaping in the front of our house and created a simple, round planting area where we put hosta plants along with a barrel in the middle with bright red impatiens. It looks much better! With some hanging baskets on the deck and a few other cute little details, the outside of our house looks a whole lot better. It actually looks like somebody cares!
Now, we’re trying to decide what color to paint the front doors. We have two doors on the front side of our house . . . . one off our kitchen to the driveway, and one that leads out to the deck from our living room. I’ve been thinking about this since last summer, but I’m having a really hard time deciding what color to choose. Our house is a very light blue/gray with white trim and dark red shutters. We will eventually paint or replace the shutters, as well, so I don’t really need to match them. I really want something that will be bold and eye-catching but I just can’t decide if we should go with teal or sapphire blue . . . coral, pink, or bright red . . . light yellow or bright green . . . or maybe purple?
So this week I made up my mind to figure this out and get it done! But I still can’t decide, so I guess I’ll need to get the rest of my family involved in the decision-making process. Except they will all probably have a different idea and then we’ll get “stuck” again until next summer. That’s when I ask myself, “What’s the big deal????” If you paint if purple and then decide you would rather have green, paint over it! It’s just paint, which isn’t that expensive, so what’s the hold-up? Could be that I’m sitting here writing a blog post when I could be painting my doors!
