We’re going on a Staycation! I’ve mentioned before (several times, I’m sure!) that we are not only quite frugal but we are also pretty boring. I mean that in the kindest way possible. We just like to stay home and tend to enjoy our own house, yard, and garden. So when thinking about this week’s topic, at first I panicked . . . . I have no clue about travel tips and tricks, or even how to get started planning an actual vacation. You know, the kind where you go away from home to a distant location for an extended period of time. I was feeling rather defeated, knowing that I really have nothing to add to a conversation about travel tips for the Home Matters Linky Party #186, but after a while it suddenly dawned on me! We could go on a Staycation and have all the fun, a whole lot less expense, and still be able to enjoy the comforts of our own home in between adventures in our little neck of the woods. So to speak. #Travel #TravelTips #HomeMattersParty
I think the closest we’ve ever come to anything that resembles a vacation would be our two trips to China. But those trips were not vacations, they were all about business. The business of bringing our girls home! We did have to travel on an airplane (THAT is the only thing that would ever get me on an airplane to fly to the other side of the world!), and we did have to stay in hotels. We also had to travel by bus from one location to another once we arrived in country.
As much as those two trips were amazing and they were probably the highlights of our life forever and ever, it is definitely not something I would like to do again. Now that we have our little family safely tucked away here among the cornfields of northern Indiana, I’m quite content to stay HERE forever and ever. The thought of a Staycation is quite appealing to me, I will admit. We can take a few days, and maybe even stay at a hotel nearby for a couple of days (that’s about all that I can handle being in a strange place, in a strange bed at night, having to pay for a place to sleep and expensive food. Like I said, we’re boring!). There is actually a lot of fun stuff to do around here, so that’s just what we are going to do this summer!
When I first started thinking about a Staycation, I decided to look up some ideas to see what kinds of things people actually do if they decide to stay close to home when they have time away from their regular, daily routine. Here’s an interesting thought:
The next time you’re looking to take a short trip, why head out of town when you can have an enjoyable vacation by staying close to home? “Exploring your backyard with a staycation is a relaxing break and one that’s very special because most of us have never visited the highlights in the area where we live,” said Marla B. Schaffer, the president and chief executive of Leaders in Travel, a New York travel consultancy.
An article in the NY Times offers some suggestions in the article How to Make the Most of a Staycation.
Stay at a nice hotel: Well, the article actually suggests staying at a “luxury” hotel, but that’s not something we would spend our money on, so finding a nice comfy hotel, maybe with a hot tub and pool, and a nice restaurant would work for us. For a couple of nights. Maybe. We could go out for dinner at a nice restaurant, come back to the hotel and hang out at the pool for a while, watch a movie, and . . . fall asleep. Sounds perfect to me!
Check out the tourist office: This will be a great source of information on stuff that is happening and places we could go while visiting the closest Big City. Which isn’t all THAT big, but big enough for us! There are museums, parks, theaters, and fun little boutique shops. That would be fun for an afternoon. That’s all.
Consider a splurge: Hmmmm . . . . a helicopter ride or private boat tour or a massage or facial. Probably not, but there is an interesting glass bottom boat that offers rides in the summer not too far from us. That might work.
Don’t overschedule: Now that’s what sounds good to me. Let’s go for a walk through the park or stroll down Main Street and check out the little diners and boutiques. How about we go to a movie, or better yet, stay in our room in our jammies and watch a movie together. We’re happy with the simple things – a freshly brewed cup of coffee with chocolate creamer while sitting quietly by the window in my jammies in the early morning, while my family sleeps peacefully nearby; sitting by the pool while the girls splash and play, or relaxing in the hot tub at night before falling asleep peacefully in our private corner of the world, just my little family and me.
That’s what we’re going to do this summer. It won’t cost a lot of money – we have other things we would rather do with any $$$ that might be available after all the bills are paid – and it won’t be as stressful as having to make travel arrangements. It will truly be relaxing and fun! Can’t wait to start our Staycation! How does that sound to you? Or would you rather travel far away to an exotic location? Whatever you do, have fun!
