Working from home . . . seems like the perfect job for many of us, especially those of us who would love to be at home with our children and still have the opportunity to help out with the family finances. The tricky part of working from home, that should be self-evident but doesn’t always seem to register with those around us, is that if we are “working” from home that we REALLY, really are WORKING. So if you want to work from home, your family will need to support you in this decision and acknowledge that, just because you are, in fact, at HOME – that you really are working. For those who aren’t really comfortable with self-disciple or self-motivation, working from home might not be a great opportunity. But for people who love the challenge of an interesting and meaningful job with flexible hours, pretty good pay, and still allows you to be at home with your family, here’s one possibility that might work for you.
VIPKID is an online ESL teaching platform, where you teach English to children in China. Of course, since we have traveled to China twice to bring our daughters home, we already have a love for the country, culture, and people of China. And because we still do have a couple of kiddos at home (although they are both teenagers now, my preferred place of employment is still at home), it has been important for me to find opportunities to help out with our family finances – kids are expensive, even when you are rather “old fashioned” parents who aren’t inclined to provide the latest shiny object for kids who think they simply can’t live without “it.” Whatever the latest “it” might be. So I’ve been looking at different opportunities for quite a while, trying out this one and that one, and even though there are lots of things out there that one could do to generate some income working from home, this is the one that seems like a good fit for me and my family.
I have recently been hired by VIPKID, signed the contract and all the legal stuff, but because of Chinese New Year which is celebrated during the month of February and families (and the staff at VIPKID in Beijing) are all on holiday until next week, I have been using this time to do the training for using their teaching resources and platform for the past few weeks. I will begin teaching real students next week . . . but so far, everything I have experienced has been very positive. Of course, I’m sure as with any company or place of employment, everything isn’t nor will it ever be “perfect,” but so far, so good.
I’m excited for this opportunity for a variety of reasons, but mostly because it will allow me still be be at home when my girls need me (like dropping off and picking up from track practice, orthodontist appointments, tennis practice, therapy appointments, youth group activities, and on and on and on . . . . ), and it will allow me to help with the family finances AND it will give me the opportunity to teach, which is something that I love to do!
If you are at all interested in looking at this employment opportunity for yourself, check it out! If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me and I’ll be happy to share with you what I’ve learned so far. There will be much more information once I get a bit more experience with this company, but for now my best guess is that it looks like a great possibility for this Work-at-home-Mom. What do you think? Do you have any work-from-home suggestions that have been a good fit for your family? I’ll let you know how this turns out in the coming weeks!
PS There are several other online ESL companies that I’m looking at and will share some of that information with you next week. Right now I’m getting prepared for teaching my first students with VIPKID – so let me know if you have any questions!
PPS To apply for this opportunity, you do need a Bachelor’s degree, but ESL specific certification is not required. That is something that you can obtain along the way. The primary requirement is that all teachers must be native-English speakers, and any teaching experience is also helpful.
Please join us for this week’s
