Window boxes have always been one of my favorite things. We’ve had window boxes on just about every house we’ve lived in, including on the little building beside our garage when we lived at the lake. So, of course, now that we have moved into town, we will be adding window boxes to this house along with cleaning out and updating the perennial gardens and a tiny vegetable garden in the back.
When we lived in a blue house, it had white trim and black shutters, with white window boxes. We had a lot of shade so I would always plant red Impatiens in my white window boxes, with some of the pretty trailing green vines and it was so beautiful! All summer long the Impatiens would keep blooming and the window box would be really full of bright red blossoms with green accents. Perfect for a blue house.
Our house now is light gray with dark red shutters, and we have quite a bit more sunshine so I’ll have to figure out what will work best here. I can’t wait to get started, hopefully this weekend, getting my hands in the dirt and planting a few flowers. By next weekend I should be able to set out some tomato plants along with a few cucumbers, green beans, carrots, and sweet peas. I think the girls want strawberries, so perhaps we will get a few started this year and they’ll be ready by next spring.
There is so much to do but it is one of our family’s favorite things . . . making our world beautiful! On my way to the garden to see how the Hosta plants are doing that we divided last weekend – that was a big job, but they were all popping up and looking really good yesterday. Can’t wait to see them today! Hope you are having a great week so far. Please join us for the Favorite Things Linky Party – meet some new friends and connect with a few old friends. See you there!
