After almost 10 years, I am finally being evicted from my previous home. My little corner of the blogosphere, the original mamas*little*treasures blog, suddenly and completely quit. One day I sat down to write a new blog post, and I couldn’t get to my dashboard. The blank white screen only said “fatal error,” with a bit of other explanation in geek language that I had no clue what it meant. Thinking that perhaps it was just a matter of “resetting” things (isn’t that what they always say when you ask an expert how to solve a computer problem?), I closed everything else that I was working on that day – which is usually several tabs plus numerous Word documents – and waited a few minutes.
Well, by that time, I probably waited close to a half hour because I couldn’t just sit here and stare at a computer screen while it was trying to figure out what to do, so I pulled out a load of laundry from the dryer and folded it. I hate to waste time! When I came back, thinking quite optimistically that all would be well in my little world, I was quite dismayed to discover that I still had an unintelligible “fatal error.”
I played this game for a couple of days thinking that perhaps there was a problem with the host site, or something important like that, and it would resolve itself. Not so fortunate. Eventually I broke down and called GoDaddy and asked if they could help me figure it out, and it was determined that my blog was so old that even though I kept everything updated, it was just an old version and there was nothing that could be done to resurrect it.
My only option was to recreate a completely new blog, and try to migrate the important stuff over to the new site. And that’s where I am tonight. Hopefully I’ll get things organized here in my new home in the next few days so I can get back to the business of blogging. I miss it. Even though I have another blog (RUBY magazine), I still like to have my own personal residence here in cyberspace.
With Christmas coming up next week, I’m going to be kind of busy for the next few days, but actually this is a great time to start over . . . . with the New Year just around the corner, it will be the perfect time to rebuild. Have you ever had to start over? Here’s hoping that it isn’t too painful!
